In ancient times the few mutants that existed were feared, hunted & killed, save for one Roman Captain whose abilities were viewed as a gift from the Gods. Erik Lehnsherr, master over steel, able to use metal-hilted swords and other such weapons without even touching them, Commander of a legion of men sent to explore, subdue, & conquer the land north of the English border. Respected by his fellows, feared by his enemies, Erik was sent by the Gods.

But for Charles Xavier, a Pict man deep in the mountains with his tribe, the Fremans, his gifts were sent by the demons, at least those were the whispers from his tribe that infiltrated his mind. New to these powers, unable to control them, Charles feared his own mind, as did everyone in the tribe.

After a Roman attack, wiping out half of the Freman, the blame was set on Charles, and the decision was made to sacrifice him to the Gods, to send back to hell this abomination in hope the Gods would send away the Romans and peace would return.

Tied down to a sacrifical alter, Charles was left to die by wolf or starvation, whichever found him first.

But neither found him first, Erik did.

In a desperately amusing way it was funny that death by Roman had not been one of the many ways Charles had imagined himself dying upon this alter. )
